In pursuance of the proposal put forward by the National Policy in Education (1986) for providing opportunities to teachers in higher education for professional and career development, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (formerly UGC-Academic Staff College) NEHU, Shillong was set up in October, 2006, with financial assistance from UGC. Teachers help the mind reach its full potential. They have to be role models, counselors, advisors, listeners, and mediators.

A teacher does not only have to teach students, they must be able to reach students; a teacher is also a learner. The transformation in learning from within the four walls of a room into the four corners of the world and the explosion in knowledge urges one to re-think on the development of higher education.
